“The best message to get people to vote is the parade effect. Hey, everybody's voting! Your neighborhood is going to have incredible turnout,” – Kevin Looper, Turning Rights Into Reality podcast, S1 E7
There has been a lot of concern raised about voter suppression and how people will vote heading into next week’s general election. Countless new academic studies, election modeling exercises, news stories, and, yes, even what candidates say at presidential debates all mean there is a great deal to discuss when it comes to access to the ballot.
But for the average voter, what is the potential of voter suppression and why should the method we use to vote matter? How do our national leaders show up in that conversation, and what can We the People do about it?
The importance of getting people to voting, vote-by-mail, and spotting voter suppression are featured in the Voting Now: Turning Rights Into Reality podcast – a series honoring the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote and fostering a greater understanding of elections, how they work, and to find out if there ways we can help to secure the vote in this year’s election.
In this episode, guest host Karmen Fore interviews Dan Lavey and Kevin Looper. They are two A-list political operatives that both have decades of experience on candidate and ballot measure campaigns in Oregon and beyond — though often working on opposite sides. They are commonly sought out for their advice, their insight, and their knowledge of how elections work.
