It’s remarkable and infuriating that Oregon’s next governor could potentially come from a candidate who won their party primary with less than 13% of the registered voters in the state.
In my opinion municipal elections should be nonpartisan. Small, single member statewide districts should be replaced with large, multi-member districts with the seats being filled via proportional representation. If third party and independent candidates can win enough seats in the state legislature to prevent either major party from having a majority, there would be incentives for cooperation/compromise to get things accomplished.
