OR360 launches candidate tracker for 2024
Reagan Knopp's candidate tracker will be a subscriber perk for OR360 members.
Over the past few elections, I have traditionally aggregated information from news, social media, campaign releases, filings with FEC, Oregon Secretary of State, and insider tips about all Oregon candidates running (or not) for federal, statewide, and legislative offices on my website for free. I am bringing back the candidate tracker for the 2024 election cycle for OR360 subscribers. I wanted to explain why:
The OR360 readership and subscriber base is politically astute and interested in Oregon politics. It’s likely the largest list of folks interested in this kind of information.
I have considered charging for it in past years, but I have not felt that this project alone justifies charging real money. Adding it to the subscriber only content in the pipeline for the upcoming election felt like something that would provide value that readers have and will be willing to continue to pay for.
I will keep it updated with breaking candidate news as quickly as possible. You can also email me a tip or message me on Twitter (just let me know if you want credit). I’ll send out emails to our subscribers whenever there are significant updates that need to be explained.
This initial version of the candidate tracker if free for everyone in this email. I will continue to update it on this page for subscribers. Bookmark that link whenever you need to check the latest version of the tracker.
At this point in the calendar, I plan to do monthly updates. Candidates cannot file paperwork to become candidates until September, but they can file paperwork to raise money as a state Political Action Committee (PAC) with the Secretary of State or with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for federal races.
This first update is focused on getting us into starting position for the election. It lists current incumbents, most of whom have not declared their plans yet for the election. There are a handful of places where there is some activity:
Oregon’s 5th congressional district was key for Republicans flipping the U.S. House and will be targeted by Democrats in an attempt to flip it back.
Republican state senators who racked up more than 10 unexcused absences are making plans to run for re-election. Democrats believe these Senators will be declared ineligible to run under the prevision of the constitution that came from Measure 113 (2022). Five Senators have declared plans to run again. Two of those are asking for additional information from the Secretary of State around how Measure 113 will be enforced. The Secretary of State’s spokesman expects to deny ballot access which is believed to trigger legal action from the Republicans. The Secretary of State is also waiting for advice from the Attorney General.
