I've read "The Politics Industry" and agree with the problems identified but not the solution. Final Four/Five is just an expansion of top two primaries implemented by California and Washington. It shifts the diversity of candidates from the general election to the lower participation primary election. California residents are already asking for top 4 instead of top two so there are more candidates for an office than just two Democrats on the general election ballot. The best solution is semi-open primaries that allow any resident to vote in the Democratic or Republican party primaries. Candidates should be able to qualify for a ranked choice voting general election ballot by winning a major party primary, winning a third party nominating convention, or by submitting a reasonable number of petition signatures.
